Assessment Principles
This module establishes the foundational understanding of IB assessment philosophy. You will analyze the role that different forms of assessment play across all four IB programmes and begin to examine how your personal worldview intersects with assessment practice.
Learning Outcomes
- •Analyze the role that different forms of assessment play in supporting the PYP, MYP, DP, and Career-related Programme (CP). (PO 4,5)
- •Evaluate how a personal worldview interacts with assessment in the International Baccalaureate. (PO1)
Essential Questions
- •What are the foundational principles that International Baccalaureate assessments are based on?
- •How does the Career-related Programme (CP) apply these assessment principles alongside career-related study?

We have all no doubt had at least some success and a bit of shortcoming as students. Consider one specific course, unit or even lesson you had as a student that stands out as a highly positive or highly negative experience. Make this determination based on the feedback/evaluation you received via the experience. Discuss within the context of these questions: • Was there a coherent feedback/evaluation/grading system intact? • Did the system support or hinder your success? • What role did assessment play in the success? Review the IB publication Program Standards and Practices resource as you engage in this Forum. Consider aspects of your own experience that support or affirm IB principles either by their absence or presence. Finish your initial post with a declarative statement indicating that your experience regarding grading and assessment was extremely lacking, very well designed and structured, or anything in between. Follow the Forum guidelines as you create and enter your posts.

The IB publication Assessment Principles and Practices – Quality Assessment in the Digital Age overviews the baseline IB philosophy on assessment. It specifically addresses the nuances and logistics that online learning and teaching have brought into the world of education in the last decade and beyond. The document is especially relevant given the pandemic conditions and aftermath that propelled online delivery of education into the mainstream. Read through the entire document and respond to twenty five statements along the way. The statements are either true or false. Your task is to simply to: 1. Label each of the statements as true or false, 2. Write a one to two sentence clarification for each of the twenty five statements that reinforces those that are true and clarifies the errors of those that are false, 3. Reference a page number from Assessment Principles and Practices – Quality Assessment in the Digital Age that you based your answer on. The statements will follow the reading sequentially. Once you start reading you will find the information needed to respond to the first statement. Information needed to respond to the next statement will come next, then the third, etc. You will not need to jump around the document when working through the twenty five statements. A word document has been provided on the course site. You can open it and record your answers. Make sure to save the document before submitting.
Formative Assessment
This module dives into formative assessment as a cornerstone of IB pedagogy. You will explore how formative assessment supports teaching and learning across all programmes, examine key literature, and analyze specific formative assessment methods.

From the last module… We have all no doubt had at least some success and a bit of shortcoming as students. Consider one specific course, unit or even lesson you had as a student that stands out as a highly positive or highly negative experience. Make this determination based on the feedback/evaluation you received via the experience. This week, respond to the posts of your classmates. You may want to consider responses that: • Affirm the experience of your cohort mate, • Comment on a similar experience you have had, • Indicate areas of growth given the discussion. Follow the Forum guidelines as you create and enter your posts.
Graded Assignments
Paul Black and Dylan Wiliam produced a groundbreaking response to the standardized testing movement in a 1998 article titled Inside the Black Box: Raising Standards through Classroom Assessment. It is duly noted that this article is now over twenty five years old. However, this article was instrumental in refocusing classroom instruction to a formative assessment driven approach. Read Inside the Black Box: Raising Standards through Classroom Assessment. Write a 1200 word (4 page) summary of Black and Wiliam's commentary. Organize your thoughts around the following: • Does improving formative assessment raise standards? • To what extent should formative assessment drive instruction? • How can formative assessment be improved? Use a minimum of three specific references (APA 7th edition) from the article in your summary.
Use the google search tag Formative Assessment Methods to survey common uses of formative assessment, read 54 Examples of Formative Assessment, and then read Chapters 5–7 (pp. 59–100) of Future-Focused Learning: Ten Essential Shifts of Everyday Practice. Analyze five of the formative assessments of your choice. Consider choosing those that align with your programme level and/or discipline. Use the following questions to guide your analysis: • What value do you see in the formative assessment? • Does the formative assessment provide information that could inform future instruction? • How feedback friendly is the formative assessment? • What types of learners might the formative assessment support? • Do you see any weaknesses with the formative assessment? Use the word document table to register your thoughts.
Artificial Intelligence
This module explores how Artificial Intelligence tools can be deployed in educational programme design, grounded in the official IB position on AI in education. You will evaluate sample rubrics from your programme level, design an AI-generated rubric aligned with IB guidance, and submit an initial unit proposal.
Learning Outcomes
- •Analyze the role that different forms of assessment play in supporting the PYP, MYP, DP, and CP. (PO 4,5)
- •Develop effective assessment strategies and tasks that provide feedback to students in support of achievement for the PYP, MYP, or DP. (PO 5,6)
- •Implement learning activities consistent within the principles of learning that underpin IB curriculum via the PYP, MYP, or DP. (PO 2,6)
- •Structure teaching methodology, learning activities, and student resources that support the PYP, MYP, or DP. (PO 2,6)
Essential Questions
- •How can AI tools be used to design rubrics?
- •How can prompt engineering make LLM outputs usable and IB-aligned?
- •How can GeoAI platforms (e.g. satellite mapping) drive PYP/MYP inquiry into real places?

Read Future-Focused Learning: Ten Essential Shifts of Everyday Practice (p. 59–100) from the last module as well as How To Give Effective Feedback to Your Students (p.1–134). Then, review the six sample rubrics provided. Comment on the strengths and weaknesses of the rubrics from the programme that you are specializing in (PYP, MYP, or DP). Consider: • What do you consider the strengths of the rubric? • Are there apparent weaknesses? • In your mind, do the strengths significantly outweigh the weaknesses? Or is the reverse true? Reference this week's reading material, as appropriate, in your post. Follow the Forum guidelines as you create and enter your posts.
Work through three prompt-engineering moves — Role, Context, Format — to turn a vague request ("make a rubric") into a structured prompt that names the IB programme, the criterion (A–D), the achievement bands (0–8), and the audience. Test your prompt in the AI Lab or a free LLM, then submit (1) your final prompt, (2) the AI-generated rubric draft, and (3) a short note on what you refined to make it programme-aligned. The goal is repeatable prompt engineering, not a one-off rubric.
Use a GeoAI or satellite-mapping tool (e.g. Google Earth Engine, EOSDA LandViewer, or ArcGIS Living Atlas) to support a PYP or MYP inquiry into a real place — for example, comparing NDVI (vegetation health) or water/land cover across two neighborhoods tied to your unit's central idea or global context. Submit (1) the inquiry question, (2) a screenshot or export of the GeoAI layer students would interrogate, (3) how students will move from Tuning In to Finding Out using the spatial data, and (4) a note on inclusion: how offline access is provided for students without devices.

Explore a free online AI educational tool that can be deployed to build rubrics. You are free to use the tool of your choice. Perhaps you have one that you readily use. Magic School would be a good choice for you to navigate the world of Artificial Intelligence. Set up an account to get a free trial with the product. Once you have accessed an AI tool, use it to generate a rubric. Create an assessment and build a rubric that could be used to assess it. Submit the created document. The purpose of this assignment is to give you some familiarity using AI technology for the purpose of educational program design.
You will be designing and revising a unit of instruction over the three modules. You will also teach one lesson from your unit during module six, reflect on that experience in module seven, and consider feedback regarding your unit process in general in module seven. This unit is meant to be an original work that blends international-mindedness, inquiry, and effective feedback processes according to International Baccalaureate suggested pedagogy. You are, during this module, to submit a proposal that gets this process started. For that proposal, create a bulleted list that indicates: • The programme you are specializing in, grade level, discipline, etc. • A general content description, • Elements of the Learner Profile you will highlight in your unit, • Method of inquiry you will be guiding students through, • Types of assessments you will employ to give students authentic feedback. The unit process will be a fluid one. You will receive feedback on your proposal for your consideration before moving forward. Again, this unit is meant to be one of original design. If you will be significantly relying on existing work, please include a copy of that with this proposal.
Unit Planner
This module focuses on drafting a full unit of instruction aligned with your IB programme of emphasis. You will respond to peers on the rubrics forum and produce an initial unit planner draft.
(PO 5,6)
- •Implement learning activities consistent within the principles of learning that underpin IB curriculum. (PO 2,6)
- •Structure teaching methodology, learning activities, and student resources that support the PYP, MYP, or DP. (PO 2,6)

From the last module… Review the Future-Focused Learning: Ten Essential Shifts of Everyday Practice (p. 59–100) from the last module as well as How To Give Effective Feedback to Your Students (p.1–134). Then, review the six sample rubrics provided. Comment on the strengths and weaknesses of the rubrics from the programme that you are specializing in (PYP, MYP, or DP). This week, read all responses noting especially the ones from your programme level. Reading details from the other programme levels will enhance your overall knowledge of IB. Respond to three posts from your programme level AND three from other programmes. Note insights you found helpful and/or share personal experiences you have had as a teacher or student with the feedback mechanism. Follow the Forum guidelines as you create and enter your posts.
Graded Assignments
Begin drafting a unit of instruction from your programme of emphasis: PYP, MYP, or DP. The unit of instruction should be approximately ten to fifteen hours in length and be an original design. Three different planner templates are provided and you will naturally use the one from the program level you are specializing in. Those of you specializing in either the MYP or DP will be working primarily from your academic discipline/area of licensure. However, remember that IB places high value on interdisciplinary work at the MYP and multidisciplinary work at the DP level. PYP units will be created via a transdisciplinary approach. The PYP Planner: It will be helpful to review the Learning and teaching resource before you begin planning. The key to a strong PYP unit is to have a central idea that promotes an inquiry approach. The MYP Planner: Make sure you thoroughly review MYP: Developing Units before getting started. Selecting a global context and then developing strong lines of inquiry is the key to a strong MYP unit. IB does not have a universal DP planner. They give schools three different options to use. We have selected option #2 that is MYP aligned. There is no one controlling IB document to guide the creation of DP units. It will be helpful to review the Diploma Programme: From Principles to Practice before getting started. Engaging units of study take time to develop. This module's work is an initial draft of your unit.
Coaching & Revision Session
This module centers on a 1:1 coaching and revision session with your instructor. You will meet for a review of your unit planner and write a personal assessment reflection paper.
(PO 5,6)
- •Implement learning activities consistent within the principles of learning that underpin IB curriculum. (PO 2,6)
- •Structure teaching methodology, learning activities, and student resources that support the PYP, MYP, or DP. (PO 2,6)
- •Evaluate how a personal worldview interacts with assessment in the International Baccalaureate. (PO1)
Essential Questions
- •What instructional approach most effectively promotes student learning?
Required Readings & Resources
Learning Activities (ungraded)
Before your coaching session, complete a structured self-review of your Unit Planner Draft. Audit each section against these IB alignment questions and post your findings: • Inquiry: Is there a central idea (PYP), a global context with lines of inquiry (MYP), or disciplinary/interdisciplinary aims (DP) that students actually investigate? • Formative feedback loop: Where do students find out how they are doing before the summative? Name the exact checkpoints. • Learner Profile & ATL: Which attributes and skills does the unit intentionally develop, and in which learning experiences? • Assessment: Do formative checks feed forward into the summative task? Finish your initial post with the three most important questions you want to raise in your one-hour review session. Your instructor will read these before you meet. Follow the Forum guidelines as you create and enter your posts.
Prepare for your Assessment Reflection by mapping your personal worldview onto your assessment practice. Create a three-column table: • Column 1 — Belief or experience (e.g., your faith tradition, culture, socioeconomic background, or a memorable assessment moment from your own schooling), • Column 2 — How it currently shapes what you assess, how you give feedback, or what you value in student work, • Column 3 — How it will shape your future formative and summative practice in your chosen IB programme. Bring this mapping to your coaching session. It becomes the evidence base for the 1500-word Assessment Reflection and addresses PO1 directly — evaluating how a personal worldview interacts with assessment in the International Baccalaureate.
After your coaching session, draft a revision plan for your Unit Planner using the course's visible-revision conventions: • List each instructor suggestion you received and your response to it — adopt, adapt, or respectfully decline, with a reason, • Show your planned edits: red bold for new or revised wording, strikethrough for deletions, • Mark where the Module Six Learning Activity will slot into the revised planner. This plan is your bridge between the Unit Planner Draft (Module Four) and the Revised Unit Planner (Module Eight) — the visible record of your response to feedback.
Graded Assignments
Schedule a one hour appointment with one of the course instructors representing your programme level. Instructors will have reviewed your Unit Planner Drafts and offer you validation and revision suggestions regarding your proposal. The aim of this session will be a discussion on a holistic International Baccalaureate learning approach that harnesses international mindedness, a strong inquiry approach, and an authentic feedback process. The appointment will also cover the design of the Learning Activity teaching assignment for Module Six. The Learning Activity will be part of the developing Unit Planner. Again, you will be offered validation and revision suggestions.
Create a work that reflects your current philosophy on the use of assessment in the educational process. Detail the extent that your personal worldview and ethical framework contributes to your position. Detail your past, present, and future use of formative and summative assessment. Also include specific assessment elements that pertain to the programme you are specializing in. This paper should be in APA format and be 1500 (5 pages) words in length.
Practicum
This module moves into practical application. You will design differentiated learning activities grounded in the Harvard Zero Project framework and teach a lesson from your unit planner to a real or alternative group of students.
Learning Outcomes
- •Develop effective assessment strategies and tasks that provide feedback to students in support of achievement for the PYP, MYP, or DP. (PO 5,6)
- •Implement learning activities consistent within the principles of learning that underpin IB curriculum. (PO 2,6)
- •Structure teaching methodology, learning activities, and student resources that support the PYP, MYP, or DP. (PO 2,6)
Essential Questions
- •What instructional approach most effectively promotes student learning?
- •How can interactive flat panels, 3LCD projection, and digital whiteboarding deepen student-led inquiry?
Required Readings & Resources
IB AI Lab resource
Learning Activities (ungraded)
Review course materials on differentiation and inclusion. Draft three learning activities that support the learning framework of your unit planner. The activities must be based on the Harvard Zero Project site. Each activity must include a differentiation and inclusion plan. Post your three learning activities in a single file in the Differentiation and Inclusion Forum. Submitted files will be part of a Forum response session in the next module. Follow the Forum guidelines as you create and enter your posts.
Design and deliver one inquiry lesson using an interactive flat panel, smart display, or digital whiteboard (e.g. a touch panel, a 3LCD projection setup with a whiteboard, or software like Google Whiteboard or Microsoft Whiteboard). The lesson must let students manipulate, annotate, or co-construct thinking on the board — not just view your slides. Submit a short plan that names (1) the inquiry phase the display supports (e.g. Sorting Out, Going Further), (2) what students do on the display, (3) how you capture and save the board as evidence of thinking, and (4) an offline fallback so every learner can participate even without the display. Reflect on what the display made possible that paper could not.
Graded Assignments
Teach the learning activity chosen from your review session to a class or an alternative group that you and your instructor agreed on. The best scenario is for you to teach it to a classroom of your own students that you see day in and day out, that may not be possible for a number of reasons. The next best setting would be for you to teach it to a class of students you have access to such as a neighboring teacher's class. If that is not possible, other options such as teaching it to family members, colleagues, or neighbors will work. It is preferable for you to have yourself videotaped as you teach this lesson. If that is not possible make sure you take note of how your students respond to your lesson. It is also important to elicit feedback from your students. Teach your lesson through its entirety including any assignments, exit slips, assessments, etc. You will be asked to produce a written work on your experience in Module Seven.
Reflection
In this module, you will respond to your peers' differentiation and inclusion work and write a structured reflection on your mini practicum teaching experience.

Learning Activities (ungraded)
From the last module… Review the Differentiation and Inclusion Submissions of your fellow cohort members. Respond by noting what you have appreciated about their work or what you learned from it. This week, read through the files submitted by fellow cohort members. Comment on all the files from your own programme area with suggestions, validations, and/or questions. Read through the files of other levels for general knowledge.
Graded Assignments
Consider the lesson you taught in the last module and reflect on the experience. • Describe the dynamics of your teaching experience: time, place, student(s), etc. • How did your plan unfold? • What were your learning targets? • Were learning targets achieved? How do you know? • How effective was your plan? • What would you do differently next time? Summarize your thoughts in a 900 (3 page) word paper.
Final Products
This final module brings together all your learning from the course. You will write a comprehensive educational philosophy paper and submit your revised, completed unit planner.
Learning Outcomes

Graded Assignments
Write a 2400 word (8 page) paper that details your educational philosophy. Use material from IB Foundations & Frameworks and IB Pedagogy & Programme Development, International Baccalaureate documents, your own experiences, and any other sources of your choice. Include your personal worldview including the elements of belief and ethical framework, ethnicity, and socioeconomic factors. Detail your work in regards to how it would work in your school setting. Specify how you will continue your work and approach future opportunities in the field of education. This is not meant to be an International Baccalaureate endorsement work. Rather, it should describe the intersection of your own mindset and the International Baccalaureate. Use of a first person format is fine if that suits your style. Your work should use an APA format and include a minimum of eight appropriate references.
Submit a completed unit of instruction you have been working on since module three. Your submission should highlight revisions made from your review processes using red bold font for new or revised wordings and the strikethrough key for deletions. Include the activity from your mini practicum (module six) as well as the Differentiation and Inclusion activities (modules six and seven).
